Dental Implants Replace Lost Teeth

We give you your smile back. If you are missing one or more teeth we can replace them with artificial teeth that look and perform like real ones. At Admiral House, replacing or restoring missing teeth is one of the services we offer that has functional and aesthetic benefits. In this minor surgery, one of our specialist dentists replaces your tooth roots with metal posts and implants artificial teeth that screw into the post. Dental implant treatment gives solid support to your new teeth and is an alternative to bridgework or dentures.

Dental Implant Surgery at Our Berkhamsted Practice

We schedule your surgery after we address all of your concerns and questions about dental implants—be aware that implants may take a few visits to complete. On the surgery date, our dental team removes the decaying or damaged tooth (if it is still there). We prepare the area and place the dental implant, which is the screw-like post into your jawbone. Your bone needs time to heal and tighten around the implant before we see you for a second visit to finish the procedure.

On your next visit, we place the abutment and then connect the artificial tooth to the implant. The models of your teeth and jaw we took during preparation are used to create and size the artificial tooth so you can rest assured that it fits perfectly.

The cost of dental implants is included in our fee schedule. Please give us a call at (01442) 863204 to book your appointment at our dentist in Berkhamsted.

Preparing for Implant Surgery

Your dentist always starts with a comprehensive dental exam to get the entire scope of the work that needs to be done to restore your smile. We take X-rays, images, and models of your teeth and jaw. We take the time to review your medical history on file and talk to you directly about your health, medications, supplements, and any other medical conditions so we can design a treatment plan with you. We discuss all of your treatment options, including the pros and cons of each so you have all the information you need to feel confident in getting dental implants.

Our treatment recommendations depend on factors such as the condition of your remaining natural teeth, how many teeth need replacing, and the condition of the bone where implants would be placed. In some instances, patients may require a jawbone graft to rebuild soft bone that cannot support the implant. Your dentist will talk to you about this additional procedure if it applies to you.

Why Choose Dental Implants

Titanium implants do not decay and they do not move once they are in place. Dental implants are surgically inserted into your jawbone which heals around the implant to secure it firmly in place. The fusion of the metal with your bone makes it so your implants do not slip, create noise, or cause damage to your surrounding natural teeth.

Biomet 3i Dental Implants

At Admiral House Dental Practice, we use the Biomet 3i system from America, one of the most comprehensively tested and versatile implants available. These implants have a micro-textured surface that helps them stay in place.

We use two basic types of Biomet 3i implants:

  • NanoTite implants use sophisticated architecture at a nanoscale, giving a surface that promotes bone bonding to achieve a superior and stable implant for immediate tooth placement.
  • OsseoTite implants have surfaces that strengthen the implant attachment and promote better soft tissue health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting dental implants hurt?

When going to the dentist, many people worry if the treatment they’re having is going to be painful – and some even put off getting the treatments that they need due to their anxieties.

These days, thanks to recent advancements in dental pain relief techniques, any good treatment, including dental implants, shouldn’t be incredibly painful.

We understand that the dental implant procedure can sound a little intimidating, but, using a local anaesthetic, IV sedation, or even a combination of the two, you shouldn’t feel anything more than a slight pressure.

As with any surgical procedure, recovery may be slightly uncomfortable as the tissue heals and your body adjusts to the implant – but this isn’t a problem that some paracetamol or ibuprofen can’t solve.

If you experience any severe pain during your recovery period, you should seek immediate medical attention and book a follow-up appointment with our dentists as soon as possible.

How long do dental implant treatments take?

Dental implant treatment times vary from patient to patient.

If everything goes to plan, and you don’t need any additional treatments or surgeries (such as periodontal treatment or bone grafts) it should take no longer than 4-9 months for the procedure to be complete.

To better put things into perspective, you can achieve your smile goals in as little as three dental appointments, and the key stages of the dental implant treatment include:

  • Consultation – during your consultation, we’ll chat about what the procedure entails, discuss any concerns or worries you have and do a CT scan to check that your teeth and mouth are fit to undergo the procedure. If you require any treatments before your dental implant surgery, we’ll be sure to let you know the next steps.
  • Surgery – If you decide to go ahead with the treatment after your consultation, we’ll invite you back to the practice for your surgery. Typically, this will take around 1-2 hours to complete, and around 6-12 weeks to heal completely.

Crown fitting – once you’re fully healed from the surgery, we’ll arrange an appointment for you to come in for your dental crowns to be fitted. It takes around two to three weeks for them to be crafted in the lab, and placement no more than half an hour!

Can anyone get dental implants?

Usually, any patient that is healthy enough to undergo a routine tooth extraction or any other type of oral surgery will be eligible for dental implants.

So long as you have healthy gums, sufficient bone density, and are committed to keeping up a good oral hygiene routine and attending regular dental appointments, you’ll be able to get dental implants no problem.

However, we wouldn’t recommend dental implants to those taking medication for osteoporosis (bisphosphonates) or patients currently undergoing or who have undergone radiotherapy, as this affects an individual’s ability to heal correctly.
